Psalm 38:13
But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear, like a mute man who does not open his mouth.
DEAF
The second part of this verse certainly speaks prophetically of the Lord Jesus Christ, who was silent before Pontius Pilate (Matt 27:14). Isaiah speaks likewise of Jesus:
He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth. Isaiah 53:7
Yet the first part of this verse also prophetically foreshadows the majesty of Christ’s grace and mercy. During His three Jewish trials and three Roman trials in the hours before His death upon the tree, Jesus was unaffected by the ridicule, the false accusations, and the cruel torment of those sinners. And like a deaf man, Jesus was not put to inner disarray by those who blindly beat Him and ravaged His body before He was sent to be crucified (Isa 52:14). Christ, by the sovereign and eternal decree of almighty God, must go to the cross for fallen men to be saved. Likewise, by God’s sovereign and eternal decree, saved persons are to be conformed to the image of Christ (Rom 8:29), and our holy character is built through adversity in this fallen, unholy, and troublesome world (Rom 8:28). When it comes to the cavils of unbelievers against you and me as individual believers, it is best to take the part of Christ, like one deaf to the sounds of unholy hatred and bitter accusation. When we “hear” these sounds, it may cause us to meditate upon self-pity, or even study in our minds upon vengeance against others. Instead, like a deaf man, the less credence we give to the insults and injuries we suffer, the more we take refuge in the rest and peace we possess in, by, through, and with Christ Jesus, our Lord. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Heav’nly Father, may I become
More and more like Christ, Your Son:
Lord, make me deaf to mocking sin
And know Christ’s rest and peace within.
