Job 19:11
“He has kindled His wrath against me and counts me as His adversary.”
WRATH
Once again, the prophet Job provides us several prophetic insights into the life, ministry, mission, and sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. There are several truths concerning Christ in this chapter alone: verses 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26 and a few others. Today, we’ll consider verse 11.
According to Romans 5, we were God’s adversaries when we were steeped in sin and entertained our own lusts and selfish desires. We were weak, ungodly (Rom 5:6) sinners (Rom 5:8) who were enemies of God (Rom 5:10). Yet Jesus Christ, the priceless Treasure of heaven, set aside His glorious robes as almighty God and took upon Himself flesh and bone humanity; and not mere humanity, but He humbled Himself as a servant (Phil 2:7). And more than that, when He hung upon the cross, the Lord Jesus became God’s adversary for our sakes. He endured the kindling of God’s infinite wrath for sins He did not commit— for sins you and I have committed against a holy and infinite God but cannot possibly pay.
That we must be reminded daily of the infinite value of Christ’s sacrifice should tell us just how corrupt our fallen flesh is, and how much we need God’s grace for every moment of our lives until Jesus returns. May we endeavor, by God’s grace, to keep the infinite value of Christ’s crucifixion as frontlets for our eyes and tightly bound to our right hands for service to Christ and for the Father’s glory (1 Cor 6:20).
The Anointed One, Jesus Christ,
Did pay the debt we ow’d;
Christ became God’s adversary
And suffer’d wrath untold.
