9/26 Reading Portions: 2 Samuel 22; Galatians 2; Ezekiel 29; Psalm 78:1-37
Psalm 78:14
In the daytime He led them with a cloud, and all the night with a fiery light.

The eternal Christ’s care for His people is constant and fitting. While Israel wandered in the wilderness, Christ’s cool cloud covered the camp by day, shielding them from the severity of desert heat. At night, when temperatures can plummet to below freezing in the desert, Christ’s pillar of fire warmed them from the weather and protected them from wild animals. Christ’s supply is abundant and miraculous, bringing forth water from rocks (Psa 78:16); not frivolous, lust-filled drink such as beer, wine, or carbonated soda candy, but true, satisfying refreshment necessary for life. Moreover, Christ gives His people daily bread from heaven, angel’s food, just as He supplied manna from heaven (Psa 78:23-26). Oh, what care! If you’re a reader of Mr. Spurgeon’s work, tomorrow morning’s devotional thought contains these words:
“We are married unto Christ; and shall our great Bridegroom permit His spouse to linger in constant grief? Our hearts are knit unto Him: we are His members, and though for awhile we may suffer as our Head once suffered, yet we are even now blessed with heavenly blessings in Him.” —Charles H. Spurgeon, Morning and Evening, Hendrickson Publishers; ©2015; p.542
Clouds by day, fire by night, water from rocks, and bread from heaven may sometimes seem to us as common, even dreary, because His care is so constant; and because of the corruptions of flesh still remaining so deep and dark within us. Israel sinned despite God’s constant care, provision, and presence (Psa 78:17-19). May we, by God’s grace, feast daily upon the bread of His Word, drink deep of His Spirit, and gather as often as possible to point out to one another, with glorious joy, Christ’s constant care and loving presence in our midst. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
The constant care we have from Christ
Is rich and faithful for
Our Bridegroom bought us with the price
Of His shed blood outpour’d.
