8/26 Reading Portions: 1 Samuel 18; Romans 16; Lamentation 3; Psalm 34
And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt. 1 Samuel 18:4
STRIPPED
Jonathan, the son the king of Israel, gave David his robe, his armor, his sword, his bow, and his belt. This is significant as we are to surrender these things to the anointed King, Jesus Christ, as well.
The son of Saul surrendered his position as prince, when he stripped himself of the robe and gave to the anointed king, David, his earthly defenses for heavenly protection, his armor. Moreover, Jonathan trusted God’s anointed king with his guidance and application of God’s Word when he surrendered to David his sword (Eph 6:17). He also trusted God’s anointed king for his supply and sustenance when he surrendered to David his bow, the tool he used for hunting game. Finally, he trusted and revered God’s anointed king to gird his loins with an understanding of all truth when he surrendered to David his belt (Eph 6:14).
It is King Jesus, and He alone, who has fought for us and secured our victory when He hung upon the cross. Our risen Lord and Advocate continues to fight on our behalf for…
The LORD is a Man of war; the LORD is His name. Exodus 15:3
Because the Lord Jesus fights for us, does this mean we do not ourselves go into spiritual battle? God forbid; for we most certainly do. The weapons of our warfare, however, are not carnal (2 Cor 10:4), for we are armed for spiritual battle (Eph 6:10-18). Prayer, as Oswald Chambers puts it, is not preparation for the battle; prayer is the battle. Paul exhorts us to engage in that warfare:
Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 2:3
When I sing “I Surrender All,”
May it be real and true;
And in my weakness, when I fall,
May it be to worship You.
