Psalm 33:3
Sing to Him a new song;
SINGING
When I went to U.S. Navy Second Class Diver training in Panama City, Florida, we used to run in formation and sing. They said it was to help us keep cadence, and also to help us breathe better. It seemed rather mindless to me, but I did it. Later, when I attended First Class Diver training, the Lord had already saved me, and therefore, singing while running during dive school seemed a waste. I think it was because of today’s verse. We are to sing to God. Therefore, singing shouldn’t be petty or worthless. Singing should be robust, for joy in His salvation (Psa 33:1a). Singing is appropriate for the sinner saved by grace (Psa 33:1b). Singing should also be full of thanksgiving in whatever we endeavor (Psa 33:2). Moreover, our songs to God in Christ must grow in grace (a new song). To sing a new song to the Lord does not mean that we shouldn’t repeat songs we’ve sung before. A new song sung to the Lord means that we are not to sing with vain repetition. In other words, our singing shouldn’t be mindless and heartless. As the Lord’s mercies and steadfast love are new every morning (Lam 3:22-23), each time we sing to Him should be a reflection of the new dawn in our lives because of the new birth. We sing to Him because of a relationship that we now own with the almighty Redeemer; that with every day that passes, it is one day more intimate than the day before; and also, one day closer to His promised return. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Sing a new song unto the Lord.
Shout with joy for His grace.
Sing the truth of His upright Word,
For soon we’ll see Him face to face.
