But You, You are to be feared! Who can stand before You when once Your anger is roused? Psalm 76:7
ROUSED
The anger of God being roused is an expression from man’s earthly point of view, not heaven’s. God does not turn off His anger to become merciful. Mercy is His attribute. Holiness, justice, and goodness are the qualities of His eternal nature. Since God is infinite and unchangeable, the same goodness which is eternally pleased with His only begotten Son is the same goodness which blesses His people and brings wrath upon the children of disobedience (Eph 5:6).
Moreover, since we are all guilty before God because every one of us has sinned and fallen short of His glory (Rom 3:23), no descendant of Adam can stand before God in all His holy majesty. We would melt before Him like a wax figure hurled upon the face of the sun. Who could possibly stand before Him? The answer: Jesus Christ alone.
This perfect Man, Jesus Messiah, is the only Man who could, in the midst of suffering God’s holy anger, say such things as:
“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Matthew 27:46
Or,
“Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit!” Luke 23:46
Or,
“It is finished.” John 19:30
By enduring God’s holy anger for sins He did not commit, Jesus Christ is an eternal and enduring Savior. Because He alone can, and did, stand before God’s holy anger, we who are saved by God’s grace will never have to at Christ’s return. Jesus has redeemed us powerfully, completely, and lastingly. The Lord Jesus Christ is a Savior without rival. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Who can stand before God’s wrath?
‘Tis only Jesus Christ!
He’d laid down all He was and hath
To pay sin’s costly price.
